Baptist Theology: A Critical Look
Baptists, Methodists, Homosexuality
03.28.04 (12:59 pm)   [edit]
I sat in on a Methodist sunday school class today and they discussed the Methodist minister Karen Dammann's acquattal. I was shocked at how some persons involved in the discussion became so angry at her not being found unworthy to serve as a minister.

I wanted to point out that several years ago, persons in some denominations did not allow women to be ministers because the Bible prohibited it, but that it's viewed by some as OK now. A hundred and fifty years ago many Baptists believed that the Bible supported slavery.

Shouldn't we be more humble in making judgments as to what the Bible prohibits? Don't we sometimes use the Scripture to enforce our cultural biases? If so, and history affirms this, shouldn't we be a lot more carefull?

Should we err on the side of judgment or on the side of grace?

Baptists and Calvinism as a Security Blanket
03.23.04 (7:30 am)   [edit]
I kind of feel like a trend setter in that I was into Calvinism before Calvinism was cool. Back in the early 80's I was introduced to this system of thought and was at first repelled by it. Then, after reading Loraine Boettner (given to me by a presbyterian friend) I became a staunch 5 pointer.

I feel the more recent trend (unless I'm uninformed) can be explained by two factors: 1.Preachers such as John F. MacArthur are very popular and as Baptists have become more Evangelical they have embraced quite a few non-Baptist conservatives.
2. I think Calvinism is attractive because it provides a tremendous sense of security in a frightening world.

Those are my thoughts...

Oh Great! I've opened the door for number 3! I can guess already that there are those who will explain this phenomenon by claiming that the liberals have been exterminated and Baptists have returned to the Bible. That one just will not fly.

Historic Baptists?
03.22.04 (6:32 am)   [edit]
I just visited The Reformed Reader Website http://www.reformedreader.org... and am puzzled.
On this site, “Reformed Theology” is claimed to be the “historic” position of Baptists. My question is this: Who cares?

Why do Baptists appeal to tradition for ANYTHING? There have been women Baptist pastors but I don’t see anyone appealing to tradition for that practice! Heck no! Use the Bible when it’s convenient (because it can be so easily misinterpreted to prove your point), but when we have tradition on our side let’s appeal to that!

This is insane to me! I remember a group of Baptists that tried to trace the Baptist tradition all the way back to Jesus! Today, that view is laughed at by serious scholars!

If Baptists claim Scripture alone, play by those rules!

Are the Issues Discussed by Baptists Irrelevant?
03.16.04 (7:49 pm)   [edit]
I’ve been out of a Baptist Seminary for a couple of years and am employed in a non-baptist environment. The people I associate with really don’t talk about the stuff that was discussed at the seminary. In fact, when I go to the seminary and listen to conversations in the library, they are discussing the same old stuff that I heard when I was there.
It all seems like such a waste of time for me. What do you think?

The Purpose of This Blog
03.16.04 (4:45 pm)   [edit]
The purpose of this Blog is to generate discussion about what's currently being discussed among Baptists (particularly Southern Baptists).
I would like honest, respectful discussions. Be nice...so many people are already turned off by Baptists that I do not want to give anyone a reason to be further offended!
