Jesus...It's a Damn Good Story
08.27.04 (4:46 pm)   [edit]
I was reminded of this story today. In one of my theology classes my students were asked to discuss how they would react if there was positive proof that Jesus’ resurrection never occurred.

Some said that it would destroy their faith. Others said that Christianity was so much a part of their culture that it wouldn’t change them very much.
Then one of the theology majors spoke up and said, “It wouldn’t change me or my religion one bit. Even if it was a proven fact that Jesus never existed it’s still a damn good story.”

I think he was trying to communicate that giving one’s self totally to God and in service to others is still worth it. Too many Christians look to Christianity as a way to escape from the realities of the world rather than utilizing the story to make a difference in the lives of persons they encounter. Too many Christians look to Jesus for “fire insurance.” That’s really sad because they miss out on the abundant life Jesus preached about.

Haley Joel Osment is a better Christ than Gibson’s Jesus!
08.23.04 (1:55 pm)   [edit]
I just saw Pay it Forward last night. It was pretty good and I intend to use several scenes from the movie in my theology class. Osment (an eleven year old boy) develops the idea that if each person affects the lives of three other people and they pay this debt forward to three other people, then the world will be a better place. You see the struggle that Osment’s mom goes through as she has to forgive her alcoholic mother for her neglect. You see Kevin Spacey’s struggle as he must reconcile with Osment’s mother after being rejected by her. Isn’t this the Gospel?

Christ came into the world to make life better for all persons and the cost was enormous! He was rejected and despised. Osment’s final act was especially costly (I won’t give away the ending) but it didn’t end there did it? It DID change the world and he does live on! A little too Bultmannian for some, but I like it!

This beats the heck out of Gibson’s violent enactment of the passion. I always did like Paul Harvey. Pay it Forward gives us “the rest of the story” much better than Gibson’s account. It also demonstrates the purpose for which Christ suffered in a much more personal and tangible way. It tells us that Christ's death for me wasn't just for my sake alone. I must also impact the world around me. I must "be Christ" for them. It's always costly and painful, but I must live my life in such a way as to positively affect others. It wasn’t a great movie, but it was a great message!

Stem Cells Minus the Spin!
08.16.04 (11:16 am)   [edit]

Anyone out there who can point me to a website that discusses the whole stem cell issue without terribly too much spin. I am so confused by the conflicting positions out there that I really have no clue what would be the most ethical position.

Not surprisingly, those who think it might help them or those suffering from their disease are for it. Of course, conservative Christians have their agenda as well. I can't trust many of them because they are still trying to convince me that the world is 4000 years old and calling that science!

I really would appreciate your help here!

Kerry's a Buffoon and Cheney's a Jerk
08.13.04 (6:09 am)   [edit]
Last night, the Daily Show demonstrated why it deserves the Television Critics Association award for outstanding achievement in news and information. On the one hand, it showed what a wimp Kerry is. It showed Bush challenging Kerry to say that he would not have gone to war in if he had known what he knows today. Then it showed Kerry's crappy response. What a wimp! Come on Kerry, we know what your real answer is here! If you'd just say it, folks would love you! Because of Kerry's answer here...I'm reevaluating my presidential vote.

This was followed by a clip of Cheney making fun of Kerry’s use of the term “sensitive” in referring to how he would run the war. The Daily Show the showed a clip of W using the word “sensitive” in referring to how he must proceed in the war. Great stuff! Bush's camp is great at taking stuff out of context and using it against folks! Cheney is a mean, unscrupulous bastard. But then again we knew that...he was CEO of Halliburton. Because of this blatant misrepresentation of what Kerry said...I'm reevaluating my reevaluation.

Then I watched the 10pm news and saw only the clip of Cheney making fun of Kerry. Let’s be fair! Kerry is a buffoon sometimes and it ticks me off that he won’t make a stand. However, Bush’s tactics are carefully orchestrated attacks that are sometimes very unfair, but they’re pretty darn effective.

Why I Blog
08.12.04 (6:48 am)   [edit]

Why do I Blog? You know, I really don’t have the time to do it and I should be doing something else. However, as a Christian I feel obligated to speak out against what I feel is wrong with my own theological tradition, the broader church family, and society as a whole. When I see something that bothers me, I have a responsibility to attempt to speak the truth in love.

On the other hand, I’m (most times) not so arrogant as to believe that my own position is always right. Thus, I seek input from others. A couple of things in American Christianity that bothers me so much is that it is so individualistic and “me-centered” rather than communal and that persons seem to feel that there are really no right or wrong answers because religion is subjective (more on the second belief later). I simply cannot go to the Bible without bringing my perspective and biases (and neither can you!) so I must also listen to the voices of others whom God has called into the community of faith.

It’s not surprising when I get nasty responses from my brothers and sisters in Christ. I’m just so disappointed that I’m not surprised.

CHALLENGE TO CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIANS!
08.09.04 (9:07 am)   [edit]
I’d like to issue a challenge to conservative Christians. A term that I consider an oxymoron! If you want to promote Bush as your candidate, explain how he promotes a vision of the world that is consonant with the values and ideals of Jesus! Quit bashing Kerry and the Dems. There are hypocrites and rich folks (Why is marrying a rich woman is such a bad thing?) in both parties.
Bet you can’t come up with 10 solid “Christian” reasons for Bush! You can’t bash Kerry. Not being Kerry has already been taken! For the slower among you—seems that Kerry not being Bush is a major Democratic platform.

Top Ten Fundamentalist Christian Beliefs That Tick Me Off: Part Two
08.06.04 (4:12 pm)   [edit]
1. JESUS IS A REPUBLICAN-I doubt you'll hear a republican saying this!-Luke 6:24 "But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. 25 Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.

2. AMERICA IS A CHRISTIAN NATION-- By most standards, Deists aren't really Christians. Besides, when were we Christian? When Baptists were being persecuted and had to flee to Rhode Island? When Africans were being enslaved? When Native Americans were being killed and forced from THEIR land? When African-Americans were being denied the right to vote (see below)? When Japanese-Americans were being rounded up and led off to camps? Need I go on?

3. PEOPLE ARE POOR BECAUSE THEY ARE LAZY--see below

4. CHRISTIANS ARE MORE MORAL THAN OTHER PEOPLE--What about the murder of thousands of Anabaptists during the Reformation? What about how Christians have treated Muslims and Jews throughout history? THANK GOD FOR GRACE!

5. WE BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE ALONE--ever try this? "Matt.5.29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell." The truth is, NOBODY goes to the Bible without some hermeneutic! This is just an easy way to write off folks you don't agree with.

6. ANYBODY WHO DOESN’T AGREE WITH YOU DOESN’T BELIEVE IN JESUS OR THE BIBLE--This is just plain ignunce!

7. THE WORLD IS GETTING MORE SINFUL, THE GOOD OLD DAYS WERE MORE MORAL--I know Rob and Laura Petrie weren't sleeping in the same bed in the 60's. But African-Americans were being denied the right to eat at certain restaraunts, not being allowed to vote, and having attack dogs unleashed upon them for protesting. Different sins, but just as horrible as those we have now don't you think?

8. THE WORLD IS ABOUT 4000 YEARS OLD--Oh please! Just because you're a Christian doesn't mean you have to live in the Dark Ages (My apologies to the Middle Ages!). Read Genesis chapters one and two...They are theological poetry not historical accounts! What are they saying theologically? That's the point!

9. WOMEN AREN’T FULLY HUMAN--If I had to tell my daughter that God doesn't want her to be a pastor or that God wants her to let her husband tell her what she can do simply because she happened to be born without a penis, I'd be telling her that she was somehow inferior because she is not a male.

10. CHRISTIANS ARE BEING PERSECUTED IN AMERICA--I bet if the Christians in our nations high schools chose to love everyone in the schools (even the freaks) there might be less acts of violence from the outcasts.

Sorry this is redundant! I wanted to update the Blog without deleting the posts on the previous Blog.
