Jesus Needs Some Help: Why Evangelical Christians Are Seeking to Influence Politics
01.31.05 (7:47 am) [edit]
Below is a great quote by Robert Parham about why Evangelicals are seeking governmental intervention on moral issues:
“Since their own churches are marked by widespread divorce, child abuse, substance abuse, greed, infidelity, hypocrisy, abortion and homosexuality, they know that the church lacks a transforming power about which they preach weekly. They see larger social forces overwhelming the church and contend that only a theocratic government is powerful enough to bring about moral revival.” Robert Parham on “Why are so many white, evangelical Christian clergy expressing such hyper-statements about the 2004 election?” in EthicsDaily.com.

Unreadable Blogs
01.31.05 (6:14 am) [edit]
|
I hate those blogs with the picture backgrounds that make them so hard to read. What's up with the purple and black and red as well? One of the most creative media artists I know always reminds me that web pages are for primarily made for communicating ideas. You can't communicate if they are unreadable!

It Couldn't Get Any Worse
01.28.05 (6:09 am) [edit]
I was looking through my friend Bart's blog the other day and here is his entry for September 14, 2001:
"I heard on the radio that an airplane had just hit the World Trade Center, a bi-plane according to one witness. Curious, I turned on the TV and discovered that it had not been a bi-plane, but a massive jetliner. I thought to myself, “This is a major disaster.” And I thought it couldn’t get much worse than that.
But then the second jet hit the other tower.
This is horrible, I thought. This is an intentional act of terrorism. And I thought it couldn’t get worse.
But then the Pentagon was hit, and then another jet crashed in Pennsylvania. My God, I thought, it couldn’t get worse.
But then I learned those jets were full of people. Mothers and daughters and sons and fathers. And I thought it couldn’t ever get worse than that.
But then one tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. It just fell in on itself, and in a few seconds it was gone. And I thought it couldn’t get worse.
But then the other tower collapsed as well. Only a cloud of smoke and dust remained where two of the most important buildings in the world had stood. And I thought it couldn’t get worse.
But then they began to estimate how many people had been in those towers. And I thought, surely, it couldn’t possibly get any worse.
But then an old man in Huntington, NY, tried to run over a Pakistani woman in the parking lot of a shopping mall and followed her into a store and threatened to kill her for “destroying my country.” And a man in a ski mask in Gary, IN fired an assault rifle at the gas station where Hassan Awdah, a U.S. citizen born in Yemen, was working. And 19-year-old Colin Zaremba said, “I’m proud to be American and I hate Arabs and I always have,” as he marched with a crowd of 300 to a mosque in the suburbs of Chicago. And in Australia, a school bus carrying Muslim children was stoned, and vandals tried to set fire to a Lebanese church.
And I thought it couldn’t get any worse.
But then people began to talk of retaliation, about punishment, about a possible ground war, about the “nuclear option.” They started talking about how the American people have to be prepared for many “difficult” things, such as heavy casualties among our American troops.
I thought it couldn’t get any worse. I was wrong. It can always get worse. And it most certainly will get worse, if this act of violence and terror makes us forget the values of love and reason.
Consider this my personal plea to you, to everyone:
Don’t make it worse than it already is."
Sorry Bart, doesn't seem like too many were listening. Since your blog entry---
The US decided to facilitate a pre-emptive strike in spite of the objections of most of our allies. And I thought it couldn’t get any worse.
We found out that all of the reasons we were given for the pre-emptive strike were false. And I thought it couldn’t get any worse.
We found out that even though our president stood in front of a huge "Mission Accomplished" sign that more of our troops would die every day because of a lack of sufficient troops and planning. And I thought it couldn’t get any worse.
We heard about abuses at Guantanamo and the abuse of civil rights in this country. And I thought it couldn’t get any worse.
Then we saw pictures of abuse from Abu Ghrabe prison. And I thought it couldn’t get any worse.
Then I heard Rush Limbaugh describe these pictures as no more than a college fraternity prank. And I thought Rush is a bigger jerk than I thought!
Then W. was elected again and I thought it couldn’t get any worse.
Then I heard that the US might be planning an attack on Iran And I thought it couldn’t get any worse.
When will it stop!

Hey W! What about Darfur?
01.26.05 (8:20 am) [edit]
In his inauguration speech, Bush said, "All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know the United States will not ignore your oppression, or excuse your oppressors. When you stand for your liberty, we will stand with you."
What about Darfur? Too bad they don't have oil wells there.

Conservatives with Liberal Values
01.24.05 (4:40 am) [edit]
Two major beliefs of classical liberalism are that persons are naturally good and that evil comes (generally) from institutions. It seems to me that conservative Christians in America have unknowingly adopted these two beliefs. I wouldn't want them to stumble down a "slippery slope" to heathen liberalism.
Why should we post the Ten Commandments in courthouses and schools? Liberals believe that persons are good and can overcome sin by being educated. Having free will, persons can do the right thing if they know the right thing. Unfortunately, most conservative Christians believe that persons are sinners and require Jesus' death to cover their sin because they do not have the free will not to sin. Thus, how would the 10 commandments make the USA a better country. If I as a sinner can't follow the 10 commandments how can knowing them help me stop sinning?
Smaller Government is also a liberal idea. Institutions are evil! Get rid of government as much as possible (except in the case of abortion,same-sex marriage, gun control etc.!) because persons should be free to decide their fate. The new Social Security initiative by Bush is a prime example of this. Everyone should invest their own money for themselves for their retirement. I shouldn't have to support or care for anyone else. Screw those who don't make enough to support themselves now and can't put money away for their future. That's a real Christian attitude!

Christians With Bumper Stickers Beware!
01.20.05 (7:03 am) [edit]
Yesterday a big SUV rode my a** for about a mile. I was doing the speed limit. As I am prone to do, I tapped my brakes to alert him of the dangers of tailgating:) He soon sped by me, gave me a dirty look, and whipped in front of me and nearly took off my bumper! On the back of his huge, gas-guzzling, deathtrap, were several bumper stickers. "Real Men Love Jesus" "W with a flag" and a Calvin Pee Boy kneeling at the cross. I wondered if Jesus would try to intimidate people while he was driving. Would he drive an SUV? Would he advertise his spirituality or live it? Would Jesus have bombed Iraq?

Jesus, America, Guns, and Football--Update
01.18.05 (9:40 am) [edit]
Seems that publishers believe there are 1)enough books out there like the one I described below and/or 2)my colleague and I aren't well known enough to generate sales. Oh well. I'm currently working on a new book that nobody is writing about! It's a baptist theology of the church. My kids need to know about some baptists who aren't narrow and judgmental. They need to know that many baptists view the church as a place where the Kingdom of God is not only preached, but fleshed out (think MLK and President Carter).
This work will be much more positive and even if it is not published, my children will learn about true baptist heroes.
Any of you have baptist heroes?

Christian Conservatives Should Boycott Fox!
01.12.05 (10:21 am) [edit]
Political Conservatives are often Religious Conservatives, right? Then why is it that many of the conservative Christians I know watch Fox News religiously? Have they not seen the other crap that’s on that channel? Who’s My Daddy! How cruel can you get! How can a Christian condone a network that subjects these poor young people to such emotional pain? The Simple Life 2! How can followers of Jesus watch such garbage? Big Shot! People getting jerked around, humiliated and lied to. Not to mention Bill O’ Reilly’s tapes.
You see Conservative Christians are either hypocrites or stupid. Which one is it? I’m boycotting Fox (never watched their news) because my Christian values run contrary to all of the garbage they put on. Christian Conservatives should do the same!
UPDATE----A friend of mine just told me that a columnist had said the same thing recently. I did not know that when I wrote this entry. Oh well, It needs to be said again. Maybe somebody out there is like me and hasn't read the article either!

No More Excuses!--Just Lie
01.06.05 (6:39 am) [edit]
We can no longer (if we ever did) hold politicians responsible for their actions. Why? Because we are no longer held accountable for our actions. Ex. Janet Jackson. I know, it’s really not that big of a deal that we saw her breast last Super Bowl. It’s really no big deal. However, folks did lose their jobs. CBS was fined over 1/2 a million dollars. Why don't they sue her? But after Janet admitted she did it on purpose she wasn’t fined. I really have no idea why she told the truth. It really doesn’t matter anyway.
No WMDs. No Saddam-Al Quada connection. Who really cares? Remember Abu Ghraib? Will anyone other than those directly involved get in trouble? No!
During a meeting at my University on Tuesday, the Registrar announced that only a few room assignments were yet to be made for the classes starting today. She promised that the assignments would be made later that day. Guess what? Wednesday came and went with no room assignments. When the chair of our department asked her personally about the problem yesterday, the Registrar complained that many professors wanted “electronic classrooms” and they just weren’t available. The truth is that many of my friends who did not request an “electronic classroom” did not have room assignments either!
My point is that this person has not been held accountable for this ongoing problem. No big deal. Just stand up in front of everyone and lie. No one will hold you accountable! Make up excuses that are lies if you are confronted. No one will hold you accountable.
The last time I complained about my room assignment at my place of employment I was assigned to a break room. No kidding! A break room that had a portable blackboard in it! I had to walk through the entire building only to find an excellent room to teach in!
So I’ll complain anonymously on a pitiful Blog. Maybe I’ll do something I shouldn’t this year. I’ll just have to deny it or make up a lie as to why I needed to do it. Surely I won’t be held accountable.
