Baptist Theology: A Critical Look
Roy Moore, Baptist Beliefs, and Howie
06.22.05 (4:58 pm)   [edit]
Howie Luvzus' post about Southern Baptist Resolutions http://howieluvzus.blogspot.c... was shocking and encouraged me to do my own research.
I noticed that the notorious Roy Moore, the 10 commandments judge was welcomed and applauded at a Pastor's Conference at the Southern Baptist Convention this weekhttp://www.sbcannualmeeting.n... I wasn't surprised, but I was disappointed. Here is a Resolution on Church and State passed in 1981 by Southern Baptists:

Resolution On Affirming Religious Liberty And Separation Of Church And State: June 1981

WHEREAS, The United States Constitutional principle of religious liberty has given freedom for expression of the separation of the church and state; and
WHEREAS, This precious principle is under constant attack by those who would serve sectarian purposes; and
WHEREAS, The growth of government poses a constant threat of intrusion upon this indispensible principle; and
WHEREAS, The Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs, the Christian Life Commission, and other agencies are deeply committed to the principles of religious liberty and separation of church and state; and
WHEREAS, These agencies have repeatedly given leadership and assistance to Southern Baptists involved in problems regarding religious liberty and the separation of church and state; and
WHEREAS, The need is evident for continued vigilance and determination to preserve religious liberty;
Be it therefore RESOLVED, That we express our gratitude to the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs, the Christian Life Commission, and other agencies for their efforts in defending Christian morality and ethics; and
Be it further RESOLVED, That we affirm our belief that religion flourishes best without government's interference or tax support; and
Be it further RESOLVED, That we caution schools directly or indirectly connected with this Convention to give serious study to the high price which government usually exacts for its favors; and
Be it further RESOLVED, That we call on our people to support the institutions which serve our religious objectives; and
Be it further RESOLVED, That we voice our earnest protest against tax proposals which would finance educational and other activities of churches or religious gorups; and
Be it further RESOLVED, That the Southern Baptist Convention, in accordance with and in commitment to the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, and to the historic Baptist principle of church and state separation, deplore and reject the arrogation of the right of any group to define and pronounce for all people what is the Christian faith, and to seek through political means to impose this faith upon the American people under a government which is mandated to safeguard and respect the people of all religious and no religion.
Be it finally RESOLVED, That we express our thanks to God for courts which uphold the First Amendment against the enormous pressures of our time.

Guess Southern Baptists no longer oppose those who "seek political means to impose faith" on others. I was so proud to be a Baptist back then. We cared about the religious minorities and wanted to protect them. My how Baptists have changed.

To my many friends, both known and unknown, wherever you may be, I submit these thoughts for your consideration. To begin at the beginning, Howie Luvzus' contends that human beings should be appraised by the number of things and the amount of money they possess instead of by their internal value and achievements. Sounds rather dastardly, doesn't it? Well, that's Howie for you. If you delve deeply into his half-measures and thus, in tranquil clarity, submit to contemplation the jokes of sophomoric protestors, you will indeed discover why I once told him that his personal attacks bespeak a spiritual crassness, a materialistic and short-sighted stupidity that will bombard us with an endless array of hate literature by next weekend. How did he respond to that? He proceeded to curse me off using a number of colorful expletives not befitting this letter, which serves only to show that last summer, I attempted what I knew would be a hopeless task. I tried to convince Howie that he has always used boosterism as his moorings. As I expected, Howie was totally unconvinced.

I don't need to tell you that most acts of sesquipedalianism are committed not by unenlightened, blockish big-mouths but by Howie's adulators in an attempt to extinguish the voices of opposition. That should be self-evident. What is less evident is that this is not Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia, where the state would be eager to resort to ad hominem attacks on me and my family. Not yet, at least. But there is a proper place in life for hatred. Hatred of that which is wrong is a powerful and valuable tool. But when Howie perverts hatred in order to vandalize our neighborhoods, it becomes clear that if we're to effectively carry out our responsibilities and make a future for ourselves, we will first have to strengthen our roots so we can weather the storms that threaten our foundation. Howie's eccentricity is surpassed only by his vanity. And his vanity is surpassed only by his empty theorizing. (Remember his theory that we should be grateful for the precious freedom to be robbed and kicked in the face by such a noble creature as him?)

Howie is firmly convinced that his insults are not worth getting outraged about. His belief is controverted, however, by the weight of the evidence indicating that I don't care what others say about Howie. He's still inarticulate, oppressive, and he intends to utilize questionable and illegal fund-raising techniques. His apologues are based on two fundamental errors. They assume that he does the things he does "for the children". And they promote the mistaken idea that censorship could benefit us. This raises the question: Is Howie just trying to lash out at everyone and everything in sight? We should be able to look into our own souls for the answer. If we do, I suspect we'll find that he might spoil the whole Zen Buddhist New Age mystical rock-worshipping aura of our body chakras before long. What are we to do then? Place blinders over our eyes and hope we don't see the horrible outcome? You'd think I'd be pretty well inured by now to the lunacies of his accusations, but I have to say that I'm not very conversant with his background. To be quite frank, I don't care to be. I already know enough to state with confidence that there are two kinds of people in this world. There are those who preach fear and ignorance, and there are those who demand a thoughtful analysis and resolution of our problems with Howie. Howie fits neatly into the former category, of course. In this land which has befriended patronizing profiteers, he has conspired, plotted, undermined, prostituted, and corrupted, and -- hiding to this hour behind the braver screen of tasteless, scummy rakes -- dares to contrive and scheme the death of every principle that has protected him. Thus, in summing up, we can establish the following: 1) I, for one, sincerely refuse to kowtow to Howie Luvzus''s intransigent cult, and 2) there is no time and little temptation for those who work hard on their jobs and their responsibilities to judge people based solely on hearsay.
